| Lori Cruz Hayden beats out the tough competition to win the gold medal and become the 2003 IFBB World Amateur Champion! | ||
| Lori was born on July 3, 1972 to Jack and Bertha Cruz Hayden. Her family is from Agana Heights, Guam...familian “Kotla”. | ||
Sports and play was always a big part of her life. Home was a place to go once the sun went down and her mother called her in for dinner and homework. Her high school and college years were spent in North Carolina and Kentucky. Graduating with honors from Sayre School and the University of Kentucky, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She then came home to work with her family at Town House Dept. Stores, Inc. and then for J&G Corporation. Lori began weight training in high school in order to improve her performance in tennis, basketball, softball, and track and field. Her serious weight training began when she came back home. But Lori’s interest in bodybuilding began at a very young age, during the time of Arnold, Cory Everson, and local Guam bodybuilders, Benny Crawford and Mona Roberts. One day Mona Roberts came to her school and spoke to her 8th grade class about health and fitness. Lori was so impressed with Mona’s beautiful muscular physique and also very proud that a local Guam girl could do so well in competition.

Lori
decided to compete after noticing how well her body
responded to weight training, especially after a competitor
friend encouraged her to try to compete at the next Guam
Nationals. And so the story begins. After placing second
in her first competition, the 1999 Guam Nationals, Lori
went on to the 2000 South Pacific Bodybuilding Championships
in Noumea, New Caledonia. It was here where her physique
was recognized and Lori was awarded first place in
the middleweight category and also awarded the overall
championship as well as best poser. Qualifying for world
competition, Lori trained for the 2001 Women’s
World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She placed
15th out of 16 women in the lightweight category. Determined
to show the judges something better the next year, Lori
trained all year for the next World Championships. Her
second showing in the world was in 2002 at the Women’s
World Championships in Brno, Czech Republic. It was
here that the judges saw something for she placed 8th
in the women’s lightweight category. 2003 was a
year filled with competitions. In July 2003 Guam bodybuilders
succeeded in winning 5 medals for Guam during the South
Pacific Games in Suva, Fiji. Lori won 2 gold medals in
Fiji, winning the middleweight and overall titles. Finally,
the year of competition came to a successful end when
Lori competed in the 2003 IFBB Women’s World
Amateur Championships, a drug-tested event, held in
Santa Susanna, Spain. It was here where Lori reached
her personal goal of doing better and looking better
than the previous year’s competition. She was
awarded the gold medal in the lightweight (under 52
kg) category and named World Amateur Champion. MP |
